Why it Matters

Internet access has evolved from being a luxury to an essential need for people worldwide. The FCC has consistently worked towards closing the digital gap by improving infrastructure to ensure better online connectivity for households.
“44% of LGBT+ people earning less than 200% of the federal poverty level ($13,590 per year in 2022 for an individual) compared to 36% of non-LGBT+ people.”

Dawson et al., 2023

The Digital Divide is significantly impacting the LGBTQ+ community

Now more than ever we know that access to affordable, high speed internet is required to fully engage with the world around us. Connectivity is critical for the LGBTQ+ community. For many LGBTQ+ people, the internet is a crucial way to connect with others, build community, and access important medical services like PrEP and gender-affirming care. Having access to affordable, high-speed internet helps LGBTQ people to live safe and fulfilling lives by facilitating communication, education, access to resources, and connection to supportive communities.

We know that helping to connect eligible LGBTQ+ households to the ACP benefit will serve as a significant step towards bridging the digital divide for the LGBTQ+ community. Based on the eligibility requirements for the ACP, we can estimate that  over one in three LGBTQ+ people may be eligible to receive free or reduced-cost internet through the ACP. Bridging the digital divide is a critical step in helping to empower, connect, and protect the LGBTQ+ community.
